But let's be real—most people aren't plant experts and have no idea where to start admitting it is the first step. Luckily, bonafide plant experts Erin Marino, director of brand marketing at The Silland Juliette Vassilkioti, co-founder and president of My City Plantsare here to help.

For starters, Marino recommends choosing a plant based off the conditions your space provides. So, "if you're looking for a plant to put on a windowsill that receives bright direct sun all day long, choose one that thrives in those dry and sunny conditions, like an echeveria or haworthia two popular types of succulents ," she says. Having a plant does more than make you feel like you've got this whole adulting thing down. One study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that interacting with indoor plants can can reduce both physiological and psychological stress.

Plus, plants are great at purifying the air in your home by filtering out everyday pollutants. So, what are you waiting for? Add these indoor plants to your home, and you'll start reaping all the healthy benefits ASAP. Just so you know, a 'black thumb' is the total opposite of a 'green thumb. And like the snake plant, the pothos filters benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene.

Just keep it away from the windowsill. It's also a strong air purifier, removing both formaldehyde and xylene. Sound like your kind of plant? Because the bird's nest fern thrives in medium indirect light and a humid environment, Marino says, "it would do great in a bathroom with a shower, as long as there are windows that receive natural light. Vassilkioti says this one requires more attention compared to other indoor plants. If that's not a problem for you, she recommends putting a peace lily in your bedroom since it produces oxygen at night, while most other plants do that during the day.

Also like the pothos, it's "incredibly easy to prune and propagate, if you prefer a more compact shape," she adds.

Not too shabby for a low-maintenance plant that's perfect for newbies. Type keyword s to search. Today's Top Stories.

Great Garden Plants

Woodwell William C.Essential oils in these plants act as nature's bug repellent. Insects tend to avoid them. You can even use some of these plants to make your own natural bug repellent. But know that simply including insect-repelling plants in your landscape will not in itself ensure your garden is insect free. Bodie Pennisi, an associate professor and extension landscape specialist at the University of Georgia's Griffin campus.

Plant Encyclopedia

There may be fewer insects, but no one's done the research into how many plants, planted how close together, would be effective in repelling insects to any great extent, says Pennisi. One of the best things people can do to hold down mosquito populations, she advises, is to eliminate any standing water, which is where mosquitoes breed. Photo provided by Bodie Pennisi. For those who would like to give the natural route a try, we've described some easy-to-find herbs readily available at most nurseries that are said to repel mosquitoes and other annoying insects.

The smell from fragrant herbs is the result of the distribution of tiny globules that contain oils. High temperatures, for example, can cause the globules to become volatile, evaporating the essential oils and turning them into vapors, Pennisi says.

The many globules on the underside of rosemary leaves seen above are one of the best examples of this. We've included our take on ornamental flowers that can help keep plant-attacking insects at bay.
